You may have heard of Captain Murphy. He's that new as-yet unidentified face in the bubbling cauldrons of recent avant-garde hip hop, a nebulous mystery man collaborating with the likes of Flying Lotus, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Azizi Gibson, and others. He's released a series awesomely psychedelic tunes lately, but just today drops the biggest Captain Murphy release yet: The stream of the debut mixtape "Duality," accompanied by this absolutely insane 35-minute visual. If you've got the time to fry your brain, I suggest sitting down, heading over to www.captainmurphy.xxx and tumbling headfirst into the psychedelic abyss of the "Duality" video, a full audio-visual-neural-carnal experience to say the least. DOPE BEATS: AstroLogical - Revitalizer

Every time Vancouver based beat-wizard/jellyfish AstroLogical drops new tunes, they just seem to get dramatically more amazing. He and Nick Wisdom just released another fantastic EP under their collaborative name "Potatohead People," and Astro himself just posted a taste of his forthcoming new EP "Citrus Harmony," slated to drop in 3 days. Complete with lush, dreamlike synths, heavy bouncy Astro beats, a groovy-ass bassline, and overall jazzy feel, "Revitalizer" is bound to leave you drifting.

DOPE BEATS: Side Brain - On The Second Moon of Earth

LA-based with Israeli roots, Yeuda Ben Atar aka Side Brain makes bouncy, highly video-game inspired beats. Fits in nicely with the LA beats sound, extremely reminiscent of Free The Robots, and Dutch producer Hayzee. Lush synths, punchy beats, bleeps & bloops make for a sweet sonic combination. Never fear, my 1st Steps EP is on the brink of completion (album art shot & everything), and I'll do my best to post dope shit when I find it!!! Case in point: it's been a minute since ATX brother Mark Rubin AKA Crazy Fingers has posted any tracks, but he's finally come back with an amazing tune, Chinese Kitty Litter. Organically beautiful oriental ambiences with calculated glitchiness and that Crazy Fingers thwomp make for a complete package of a badass tune. Lovin this shit.

DOPE VIDEO: Dub FX - Love Someone

This one's an oldie, but one of my favorite things on the internet that I just keep coming back to. Dub FX is a musician originally from Melbourne who makes live beats using nothing but his voice, loopers & effects stations. Here he performs "Love Someone" live on the streets of Amsterdam, a soulful tune over a pumping DnB beat. LOVE IT.

FREE MUSIC: Atem - Grey EP

If you are a fan of deep, expansive, soulful electronic music that sounds like it's bubbling up from the depths of the ocean with a strange, subterranean glow, then this is some of the ABSOLUTELY DANKEST you will ever find for free. Atem, a producer from Vancouver, just dropped this incredible EP of soul-soothing atmospherics mixed with melancholic piano chords and dark garage beats, a fantastically promising successor to the sound Burial made famous. This is some amazing stuff, and I can't wait to hear more from Atem in the future. Drift away to these beats.

FREE BEATS: Radixx - Ridiculouxx

This one's a couple years old, but I just discovered it and so should you... From Raw Tapes Records, Radixx put out this badass beat tape in 2010, full of heavy hitting, swaggeringly un-quantized BOOM BAP with massive grimy, videogame-y synths and crazy sounds & swooshes. Heavy head-nodder, this one is.

FREE TUNE: Cameron King Brown - GOLD

A brother from Austin just posted this incredible instrumental, essentially a pulsating, evolving synth line over some simple bass and sparse, airy flourishes. This tune is like potato chips, I just can't stop listening...

-A shining ray of hope for ATX's next wave of producers. Look out for a jøøls remix of this in the near future!!!

DOPE TRACK: Maidu - The Way I See You (Jack Sparrow Remix)

Maidu, a collaboration between two anonymous producers, recently dropped an EP for their track "The Way I See You" on Smudge Music. The remix by Jack Sparrow is easily my favorite cut - featuring vocals heavily reminiscent of Portishead and trip-hoppy groove and depth, combined with Jack Sparrow's awesome delicate yet driving rhythmic dubstep percussion. The original track is excellent as well - it's got squelchy Tipper-esque synths and an eastern thwomp feel. CHECK IT

Australian remix genius Pogo, known for remixing disney's Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and a bunch of other stuff, has just chopped up one of my favorite movies of all time (and inspiration for my producer name): Pulp Fiction. Lojik is so amazing I can't believe I haven't heard about him before this week. Isn't social media just grand? Of course it its. Well from now on I'll be taking advantage of the internet as a means of connecting people and music as much as I can or is necessary. or whatever. What that really means is I've set up a facebook page for my producer alias, jøøls, which is now linked to this blog! (If I've managed to set everything up correctly...)

I know i've barely posted anything since before summer started, but now that I've got my bearings at my summer work I'll finally be able to use my free time productively, that is for posting awesome free tunes and other stuff, particularly releases from myself as jøøls. It's official, I now have a show on 91.7 KVRX, Wednesdays from 5-7 AM. KVRX is UT Austin's student radio station, which broadcasts on FM radio from 7PM to 9AM daily, as well as online 24/7 at kvrx.org. I will be posting album reviews, bandcamp/soundcloud links & anything else relating to music from the show as well as any other awesome music I may come across. Looking forward to a great semester of dope beats and chill tunes!

This blog will be a resource for the best in hip hop beats, electronica, and other miscellaneously excellent music that I come across, focusing on (but not limited to) the music scene in Austin. I will hopefully soon have a specialty show on KVRX, UT Austin's student radio, which will coincide with the blog.
